Mario Maioli as a Director for the Design Coordination of Fiat Auto has developed many successful models between 1977 and 1992. 
As Mario Maioli recalls in his autobiography: 
"I've told to the young designers in the "Centro Stile" of Fiat Auto to look at the tradition of Italian Design, not to do a retro' design, but to reinvent cars that will be undoubtedly Italian, even if we should talk more in European terms, rather than national....... we should fear if we feel unable to make new proposals" (Mario Maioli)
